He brings 20 years of experience as a technician and manager, in both dealerships and small local shops, plus four years in the U.S. Air Force working on aircraft. "My biggest thing is honest recommendations and building trust within community," Jason says. He's growing the business one customer at a time, on purpose.
Why Jason stopped to fix a stranger's car for free
Jason was in the right lane, headed to the store, when he noticed someone on the left side of the road bent over by a front wheel.
"I was like, oh, I can help them with that," he says. He made what he calls "a very dramatic U-turn," pulled in, and jumped out waving. "Hey, I'm a mobile mechanic in the area, and I was just passing by. But I'm happy to help you out free of charge."
The driver was a young woman, along with a young man Jason thinks was her boyfriend or brother. While Jason got to work with the jack from his own car, another driver pulled up behind them in a big truck with a flashing light. He parked so his truck blocked the shoulder, giving them room to work on the tire and get the car back on the road.
That second driver wasn't connected to the family. Jason believes he was a local handyman named Kevin who saw someone helping and decided to pitch in. "It wasn't just me," he says. "Somebody else saw me helping and then got the inclination to join in on what he could do to help."
For Jason, it was no big sacrifice. "It wasn't even out of my way. I was passing by anyways."
Mobile oil changes, brakes, diagnostics, and fleet maintenance
Jason calls his services "kind of run of the mill," but they cover most of what keeps a car or truck on the road:
Oil changes and fluid services
Tire rotations
Brake services
Diagnostics and some vehicle programming
General maintenance
Commercial fleet maintenance
Jason is currently working to bring on a commercial fleet of about 20 vehicles, where he would be their primary mechanic.
He's also upfront about what he doesn't offer yet. AC work, tires, and alignments require "much more expensive tools that aren't really mobile friendly," he says. "So I got to kind of stay away from that stuff for now." If the business grows the way he hopes, those services will come later.
Twenty years in the auto business, and no interest in the hard sell
Over 20 years in the business, Jason has seen just about every sales strategy out there. A lot of them came with what he describes as "immense pressure to sell, sell, sell."
"That's not who I am. That's not what I'm about," he says.
He ties that back to something bigger than cars. In his view, community starts small. You meet someone in your neighborhood, and the next thing you know, you're friends with your neighbor. They've got a garden, you've got a garden, and you trade vegetables.
"The cornerstone of civilization is community," Jason says. "And if we can build a happy, thriving community where we all know who we can trust, we might be better off."
Why Jason is growing through word of mouth, not online noise
Slowly, and on purpose. Right now, his work comes almost entirely through word of mouth. "Slow, but steady growth is what I'm looking to do," he says.
"I don't want to come in guns blazing and use AI to just flood the internet with my presence," Jason says. "I'm not about that."
When the workload calls for it, he plans to hire a couple of other technicians.
That same focus on relationships shows up in the tools he chooses. Jason runs his business on Tracara, a business management software he says is a great fit for a mobile mechanic. What won him over was the support. When he reports a problem, someone on their team usually gets back to him within 12 hours with a fix. "I don't feel like a customer at this point. I feel like a partner with them," he says. "It's a huge, huge thing with me, building the interpersonal relationships and rapport."
An Air Force veteran who worked on C-21A jets and KC-135 tankers
Jason is a veteran who served four years in the U.S. Air Force in aerospace maintenance. He worked on the C-21A, a military version of the Learjet. According to Jason, the only real modifications were "extra fuel booms on the ends of the wingtips." "But extra range is extra range, right?"
He was also trained on the KC-135 Stratotanker, the aircraft the Air Force uses to refuel other planes in midair. He also got to fly a two-week refueling trip within the United States, with Jason and his team serving as the ground crew at every stop.
"We flew all over the country for like two weeks," he says.
Jason's advice for new business owners? Start with one customer
Keep it simple. "Start small and do it yourself," Jason says. "Reach out one person at a time. Do a phenomenal job for them and let them tell their friends and their family."
He practices that with other local businesses, too. At a recent local business get-together, he met the owner of Sweetly Ally, a sweets business in Dade City, who brought samples of her cake pops. "Her little cake pops were absolutely incredible," he says. "Girl's talented. The product is amazing, and it tastes amazing, too."
For Jason, that's how a community works. You find people you can trust, and you tell your friends about them.
