Craig Wallace's own story doesn't start with Top Recommends. It starts nearly a decade earlier, with a much smaller bet on himself that took years to pay off. At 20, he dropped out of college because he was learning more about building a business than he was sitting in a classroom, a decision that didn't come with any guarantee it would work out.
For a long stretch, it didn't. Those early years shaped the thinking that eventually became Top Recommends, and VoyageTampa's Hidden Gems series is where Wallace laid out that full arc, in his own words, for a Tampa Bay audience that had never heard the story before.
Top Recommends Founder Craig Wallace Featured in VoyageTampa's Hidden Gems Series
Craig Wallace was recently featured in VoyageTampa's Hidden Gems series. The interview traces back to a decision he made at 20: dropping out of college because he was learning more building a business than sitting in class.

Wallace doesn't dress up how his first few years in business actually went. "The first several years were far from glamorous. I wasn't making money, and there were plenty of moments where it would have been easier to quit," he told VoyageTampa. No pivot story, no early lucky break, just years of grinding through something that wasn't working yet.
What came out of that stretch wasn't a better sales pitch. It was a genuine obsession with a narrower question: what actually makes a customer stick around and tell other people about a business. Figuring that out became the foundation of his first agency, Micro Value Marketing, years before Top Recommends existed.
The idea Top Recommends is built on
Craig's pitch to VoyageTampa readers was blunt: "the most valuable form of marketing isn't just getting customers, it's turning customers into advocates for your brand." Not a slogan, a working theory. Top Recommends exists to build the systems and touchpoints that make a customer want to talk about a business unprompted, instead of running ads and hoping something sticks.
The part of the interview that ties directly back to what Top Recommends actually does day to day is this line: "We combine marketing strategy, technology, and large-scale local and niche communities to create ecosystems where businesses don't just gain visibility, they build trust and long-term relationships." Anyone who's seen the size of Top Recommends' Facebook network, dozens of connected local groups and hundreds of thousands of members, will recognize exactly what he's describing. It's not a metaphor. It's the thing that actually exists.
VoyageTampa's Hidden Gems series
VoyageTampa is part of something bigger: the Voyage Group of Magazines, started in Los Angeles by founders Mayank Bhandari and Sid with a single site, VoyageLA. After that first site crossed a million page views, they kept going, city by city, until the network grew into dozens of local magazines across the country, Tampa included.
The group is upfront about why its interviews read the way they do. On its own about page, Voyage says most media outlets filter, edit, and polish away the personality of the people they interview, until everything starts sounding like it came from the same voice. Voyage does the opposite on purpose, keeping its features rougher and more honest, because that's where the actual person comes through. It's also openly on the side of the independent entrepreneur over the big guy: the company has said it cherishes "the rebel spirit" and doesn't think a handful of large companies should get to dominate every conversation about a city's business scene.
Hidden Gems is where that philosophy plays out weekly, a rotating spotlight on local entrepreneurs, artists, and business owners across Tampa Bay. Past features have covered everyone from cosmetologists and tattoo artists to podcasters and coastal lifestyle brand founders. It's built around community recommendations rather than a small editorial team deciding who's worth covering, which is exactly why an unpolished, small-business story like Wallace's fits right in.
Why this connects straight back to Top Recommends
Line the two philosophies up next to each other, and they're almost the same sentence. Voyage exists because it doesn't think a handful of big names should dominate a city's story. Top Recommends exists because Wallace doesn't think advertising dollars should decide which local business gets seen. Both bets are on the same thing: word of mouth, real recommendations from real people, beats a polished pitch every time.
That's not a coincidence dressed up after the fact. It's the actual reason this feature makes sense for Top Recommends to talk about at all. A company built on getting businesses recommended by their own customers showing up inside a magazine built on getting entrepreneurs recommended by their own community isn't just good timing. It's the same idea, twice.
It's also a rare chance to hear Wallace talk about the business without a Top Recommends article, event, or Facebook post doing the framing. VoyageTampa asked the questions, not Top Recommends, and that outside vantage point is worth something on its own. Readers who've followed Top Recommends through its featured articles or its Facebook groups get a different angle here: not what the company does for a business, but why Wallace built it to work that way in the first place.
