Most people in Sarasota County find out the hard way that the water here is hard. White crust on the shower door, spots on the glasses that come out of the dishwasher, a faint chemical smell at the kitchen tap. The county's own numbers back up what homeowners notice. Water hardness around here runs between 15 and 25 grains per gallon, and the Water Quality Association considers anything above 10.5 very hard. That puts Sarasota at roughly double the threshold.

The H2O Heroes are a water filtration company working on that problem across Sarasota and Manatee counties, with a Lakewood Ranch presence and service through Venice, North Port, Bradenton, Siesta Key, Palmer Ranch, University Park, and Osprey. The company was founded in 2017 by a founder the site calls Dan the Water Man, and it has grown into a dealer network spanning more than 200 cities. What makes it worth a look for a local homeowner is the front end of the process. Before anyone talks about a system or a price, a technician comes out and tests your water for free.
What does The H2O Heroes do?
Water testing, system design, installation, and repair. The company sells whole-house filtration, water softeners, well water treatment, reverse osmosis drinking water systems, and filters built for PFAS removal. It also services and repairs systems it did not sell, which is worth knowing if you inherited a unit with the house and cannot get the original installer to call you back.
The company's own framing is that it educates rather than pressures. Its site says the free water test shows a homeowner what is in the water, then the homeowner decides. No upselling, no obligation, in the company's words.
What's in your water that needs addressing?
Hardness is the big one, at 15 to 25 grains per gallon, which drives scale on pipes and fixtures and shortens the life of water heaters and dishwashers. Sarasota County Utilities disinfects with chloramines, a chlorine and ammonia compound, which is safe at regulated levels but is the source of the chemical taste and smell people complain about. PFAS, the forever chemicals, have been detected in Sarasota County water sources; the EPA set its first national limit for PFOA and PFOS at 4 parts per trillion in 2024. Trihalomethanes show seasonal spikes. And for the thousands of homes on private wells east of I-75, sulfur, iron, and manganese cause the rotten egg smell and the orange staining on toilets and laundry.
How does the free water test work?
A local technician comes to the home and tests the water on site at no cost and no obligation. The company says the test covers 15 or more parameters and takes about 20 minutes. From there, the team builds a recommendation around the results, the size of the home, and the budget.
Installation runs two to four hours in most homes, and the company offers same-week appointments, sometimes next day in the Sarasota area. Financing runs through Wisetack, with the company noting that many customers qualify for zero percent plans.
What systems does the The H2O Heroes install?
Four named units in what the company calls its Hero Series. The Sidekick is a high efficiency water softener sized for one to four people, a good fit for condos and smaller homes. The Protector combines softening and whole house carbon filtration in a single unit and is the company's most requested system for Sarasota homes on city water. The Protector Twin is the dual tank version for households of eight or more. The H.E.R.O. is an under sink reverse osmosis system for drinking water, which the company says removes up to 99 percent of contaminants including PFAS, lead, and microplastics.
For well water, the company builds multi stage systems that handle iron removal, sulfur elimination, and softening together rather than as separate add-ons.
The True Blue Distinction warranty
The H2O Heroes offer a lifetime warranty with no fine print, covering the tank, the valve, the media, and the labor. If something fails, the company says it repairs or replaces it at no cost.
On maintenance, its guidance for Florida homes is media replacement every five to seven years on whole-house carbon, sediment pre-filters every three to six months, reverse osmosis membranes every two to three years, and softener resin lasting 10 to 15 years. Annual plans cover filter changes, an inspection, and a re-test.
Checking your water before booking any service
Yes, two ways, and neither requires a salesperson in the house. The company runs a free lookup tool that pulls water quality data by zip code from the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Information System, state environmental agencies, and municipal Consumer Confidence Reports. That shows what has been detected in an area's supply, not in a specific home.
For the home specific version, the company sells certified lab test kits through a lab partner it identifies as Simple Labs. The kits cover tap water for more than 50 contaminants including lead, PFAS, pesticides, and disinfection byproducts, well water for bacteria, nitrates, heavy metals, and VOCs, and a targeted PFAS test for homes near industrial areas. Each kit ships with a prepaid mailer and results come back in three to five business days.
What does The H2O Heroes do outside of selling systems?
The H2O Heroes lists community work as part of how it operates, and points to donated systems for disaster relief after Hurricanes Irma, Maria, and Dorian and for families affected by the Flint, Michigan water crisis. There is also an H2O Kids section on the site with free games, coloring pages, and printables, which fits the comic book identity the whole brand runs on. Contaminants are cast as villains, technicians as the heroes. It makes a dry subject easier for a family to sit through.
Every technician is licensed, insured, background checked, and factory trained, according to the company. For a homeowner deciding whether to spend a Saturday morning on this, the free test is the low risk way to find out whether there is a real problem worth solving here.
Where does The H2O Heroes operate near Sarasota?
The company runs a dedicated Sarasota area office out of Lakewood Ranch, part of a network the company says covers more than 500 service areas across 34 states. Locally, service areas listed on the company's site include Sarasota, Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, North Port, St. Petersburg, Tampa, Clearwater, and Wesley Chapel, among more than 200 cities nationwide.
The company leans hard into a comic book identity, casting hard water minerals and contaminants like lead, calcium, sulfur, and iron as cartoon villains and its technicians as the heroes who deal with them. That branding carries through to a dedicated H2O Kids Zone on the site, offering free games, coloring pages, and hero printables aimed at younger family members. The company has also picked up coverage from outlets including CBS, Fox, and USA Today, and says it operates a growing network of local dealers and a training academy meant to bring new technicians up to the same standard across its expanding footprint.
